Finding Safe Passage

Dogpatch’s 22nd Street Caltrain station has the fastest growing ridership of any station in California. But, because long term planning for the line was unresolved, the station was not upgraded. Despite increased use of the facility and a building boom in the Dogpatch neighborhood surrounding the station, the platform entrance remained hard to see, difficult to recognize, cramped, dirty and dark.

Adjacent neighbors approached Fletcher Studio about helping to envision an improved entrance to the station. Initial concept designs helped build support from the local neighborhood association. The project became a priority when a local benefit district was formed. The Green Benefit District helped secure approvals and funding and worked with Fletcher Design to realize the vision for the station. Fletcher Studio’s design navigated the challenging demands of the State train authority and coordinated with adjacent Public Works street improvements, which were facilitated by The Green Benefit District. The new station entrance is a transit beacon, with lighting, casual seating and landscaping, that serves not only train riders but the community at large.
